Halloween badge- Watch and review a spooky/scary film

 Slenderman (2018)


I'm not a big horror film fan, but I braved yet another one. Luckily, the cinematographer in me (that's my job, fyi) can also watch it from a technical point of view which I guess can take the "scariness" away for me. 

There were elements which were scary or chilling to me which captured me right at the points when I relaxed a lot more. The audio and music were exactly what you'd expect from a horror. Minimal with plenty of sound effects to create the fear of the monster. 

Hallucinations and disorientation were created with visual effects which didn't look too bad. They weren't cheesy or out of place within the film, and I think it did actually heighten it because  it kind of made you feel a bit queasy sometimes. 

Technically, there were a few shots I really liked- the one which stood out was the character upside down on the bed and in the frame, the camera rotates and then she eventually flips onto her stomach and it just flows so well, both camera and directing. There were plenty of lighting set ups which I liked and as usual completely fascinates me. For instance, the library scene- I feel like I know how it was lit but it comes across so natural and minimal. 

I'm still not a big horror film fan, but Slenderman was a good watch.

Update on the crisps as this was the final one to do- I did 2 batches. The first one was when I started this challenge. A few went a little harder but majority were softer. But I did eat them right away. I found the recipe again and it did say to leave them to cool. So, I made some more tonight- but they went even soggier. So, technically I have made them, but they aren't very successful. I might have to turn up the gas number. I also might try the air fryer. But for now.... tick! ALL COMPLETED!

 Enigma:- the code was changed daily and was cracked using a machine.  ADFGVX:- These cipher text sound different from each other when used in morse code. This is to reduce user error. Reader badge- Writing a review

 I have just finished reading Tom Felton's autobiography 'Beyond the Wand'. It was unlike any other biography I have read in the past. This felt very much like sitting down with a friend and talking about stories of their life, their career, their loves.  As a filmmaker, I appreciated all the behind the scenes stories from his life on set of Harry Potter, as well as his progression afterwards. But as a human being, I appreciated the raw honesty within the writing, especially the final chapters where he discusses his mental health decline. The words were delicately chosen and hit home, enough to bring a tear to my eye.  I would 100% recommend this book.

Detective Badge

Fingerprinting began in 1984 No-one has the same fingerprints, even our own body doesn't. Each finger can be different.  By 6 months in the womb your fingerprints are developed and shaped which will last a lifetime. They don't change. A scientist proved the validity of fingerprinting for police use by shaving his fingerprints. They grew back in the same pattern.  The three shapes categorised for identification:- Arches, loops, whorls But more shapes are listed such as double loop, tented arch, plain loop.  I did my prints and found my thumb and forefinger are double loop and then they go into plain loop and I think my little finger in a whorl.  I also did my parents fingerprints and my Dad has a Whorl thumb print and a double loop forefinger, but the rest weren't clear. My mum's thumb is a plain loop and forefinger is a whorl with the rest unclear. Pretty fascinating if genetics play a part in the development of fingerprints. I just need to do my twin brother's....
